2011 ICTSI Orchard Golf Championship

Today we were treated to a masterful display by arguably the most talented Filipino golfer in the country today, Juvic Pagunsan.

Starting 4 strokes behind overnight leader Elmer Salvador, who tied the course record on the Palmer with a 65 in his second round, Juvic caught fire early with an eagle on 2 and birdies on 3, 4, 5 and 6 for a front nine of 30. This tied him at -12 with Elmer who kept pace with birdies on 6 and 7 and narrowly missed another on 9.

Salvador misjudged his approach on 10 putting his ball above the pin on the very undulating green. He then 3-putted to surrender the lead to Juvic who made par. Juvic stretched his lead to 2 after making birdie on 11 and Elmer narrowly missed his birdie putt. Elmer seemed unnerved after his bogey on 10. Juvic piled the pressure on with another birdie on 14 and yet another on the closing hole for a new course record of 9-under par 63. This eclipsed the previous course record of 65 first set by Robert Karlsson in the 1995 Johnny Walker Classic and tied by Elmer Salvador yesterday.

This clearly shows just how much potential Juvic possesses. He’s won two of three Philippine Golf Tour events this year and I suspect he has a few more wins in him.

The rest of the Philippine Golf Tour is on notice.

Postscript –

I would be remiss if I did not comment about the The Orchard and the Palmer course

The Orchard’s Palmer Course was in the best condition of any venue on the Philippine Golf Tour that I’ve witnessed to date. I played in the proam on Tuesday and the greens were PERFECT; no bouncing, skidding or anything of the sort. The ball just rolled straight and true. Yes the greens were fast; today, they looked to be rolling around 13 on the stimp.

Quite a few thought that scoring would be relatively high because the greens were so difficult but I think the opposite was true. The greens were so fast and true that you only had to get the ball on line and it would roll straight into the cup. The 65 of Elmer Salvador and the 63 from Juvic are testament to that.

The Orchard has long been one of the clubs that I admire the most for the progressiveness and professionalism of the management and staff. My experience there this week just adds to my admiration.

Bravo!
