Bayron fires 67, storms ahead by 5

Jay Bayron putted his way to a 4-under-par 67 yesterday and pulled away by four shots over Rey Pagunsan in the second round of the P1 million ICTSI Riviera Classic at Riviera’s Langer layout in Silang, Cavite.

Coming off a shaky first round 73 late Wednesday, Bayron took full advantage of his early morning start by ramming home six birdies inside 10 feet against a bogey from an errant drive for a 32-35 card.

The runaway winner of the Aboitiz Invitational presented by ICTSI in Cebu two weeks ago, Bayron moved closer to a back-to-back title romp in the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour.

With a 140 aggregate, Pagunsan rolled in a 20-footer for par on the 18th to preserve a 33 for a 72 and a 145 total.

Anthony Fernando wavered with a three-over 74 and dropped six shots behind at 146. Jhonnel Ababa also carded a 74 for a 147 as the battle for the top P200,000 purse in this 11th leg of the circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. appeared to be down to the top two players.

First round co-leaders Antonio Asistio II and Cassius Casas made 77s as they fell to 148 in a tie with last year’s national champion Clyde Mondilla, who carded a 74.
