2011 ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic – Final

1 October 2011 No Comment

With Typhoon Quiel bearing down on Luzon, the weather at the 2011 ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic took a sudden turn for the worse. The sunny, benign conditions were gone and the wind blew harder than it had all week. The scores went up, everyone struggled. Everyone except Elmer Salvador.

Salvador took hold of the ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic by the scruff of the neck under the most trying conditions of the week and lapped the field beating runners-up Mars Pucay and Artemio Murakami by a whopping 12-stokes. It was a massacre.

Salvador started like a house on fire with birdies on the first three holes, making a mockery of what is one of the hardest opening corners in local golf. He cooled off slightly with a bogey on the par 4 5th, his first in 41-holes. He offset that with a pair of closing birdies on 8 and the 1-handicap 9th and pretty much snuffed out any hopes his pursuers had of catching him. With such a huge lead, he played smart on the back nine, making sure the win was in the bag. He recorded his second bogey of the week on 13 but got it right back with a birdie on the very next hole.

Not that he needed to worry.

Cassius Casas hopes were dashed with a 9 on the par 5 4th. Artemio Murakami never got his round going and was lucky to wind up in a share for second when Mars Pucay bogeyed the finishing hole. Cookie La’O and Ferdie Aunzo recorded the only other sub-par rounds besides Salvador.

The back nine was basically a victory lap for the former lake boy from Apo Golf Club who found new life when he switched to a Bettinardi Signature 2 putter after the Aboitiz Invitational in Cebu City. Salvador’s confidence seemed to soar after his playoff loss in Singapore a month ago and he hasn’t come down since. He made golf look easy in tough conditions on a hard golf course.

When he plays like this, there’s no stopping him. It was a magnificent display.
