The city of Manila – the capital city of the Philippines, wherein a plethora of fun surprises awaits any traveler. From five-star malls, posh establishments and city resorts; even to the culturally diverse haunts, humble family estates to hole-in-the-wall joints, Manila virtually has everything to please everyone’s tastes. So diverse are Manila’s offerings that even golfers – yes, even them – have a lot of green to put at. Here are a few recommended golf courses that Manila has to offer:

Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club
Located at the heart of the EDSA revolution (well, not really, but the area is within the vicinity of the EDSA people power revolution), the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club features a challenging course, even for seasoned golfers. The 18-hole golf course features a lot of hazards, tight driving holes and its signature par-3 island green. For a short-distanced course, the Camp Aguinaldo Golf Course Club provides enough challenge that it has local golf celebrities as its regulars.

Valley Golf & Country Club
More or less an hour’s away (depending on traffic) from the Makati city district, the Valley Golf & Country Club’s golf courses provide the much needed thrill (and for some, relaxation) one gets from traveling. The two courses – the executive course and the south course – are exclusively composed of only the best Tifton grass, guaranteeing the first-class golfing experience any golfing enthusiast is looking for. The 18-hole, par-70 executive course is known for it’s hole 6 island green; while the par-72 south course is known for holding multiple Philippine Open golfing competitions.

Alabang Country Club
Located within the prestigious and secure village of Barangay Ayala Alabang, the par-72 Alabang Country Club golf course is known for its tricky sand traps. The course caters to golfers of all levels, and provides sufficient facilities (such as the pitching green, putting green and two halfway tee houses) for a relaxed, laid-back game.

Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club
Ever wanted to golf while having a majestic view of a wondrous mountain range? The Royal Northwoods Golf and Country Club can do just that. Located north of Manila, this 60 hectare, 18 hole golf course’s natural beauty is only offset with its strategically placed water hazards and sand traps. Make sure not to be distracted by the Mount Arayat and Sierra Madre mountain range!

Golfing in Manila is an exciting and thrilling sports scene. From having some of the most beautiful and challenging courses, professional and amateur golf players can sure have the time of their lives. The next time you do find yourself in Manila, make it a point to check out these clubs.

The Republic of the Philippines, a South East Asian archipelago composed of more than 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean, is what may some consider a cultural hub. A melting pot of western and eastern ideals and practices, this diverse country always has something to suit anybody and everyone’s needs. One particular and surprising facet of the Philippines is golfing, with its numerous and outstanding courses it has offer.

If you do have the chance to visit this warm, hospitable country, take the chance to tee off at this paradise greens:

Wack Wack Golf and Country Club
Founded in the year 1930, the Wack Wack Golf and Country club is one of the oldest golf clubs in the Philippines. Located in the metropolitan area of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, this club’s well-maintained course is accentuated by its accessibility. And don’t let the term “one of the oldest golf clubs in the Philippines” fool you. The Wack Wack Golf and Country Club takes its pride from holding prestigious golfing events, such as the Philippine Golf Open Championships, Asian Circuit and World Cup, to name a few.

Canlubang Golf and Country Club
Undeniably containing the two largest golf courses that the Philippines has to offer, the Canlubang Golf and Country Club provides a balance between beauty and challenge. The golf courses (north and south), designed by famous course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., has strategically placed sand traps, man-made lakes and ravines, coupled by the challenging wind speeds, to challenge even expert golfers. The behemoth, yet gracefully lined with coconut trees, golf courses are located just south of Metro Manila.

Leyte Golf and Country Club
Located in the Visayas, one of the three, geographical island divisions in the Philippines, the Leyte Golf and Country Club provides a much more relaxed playing ambiance. Laid-back and simple, the 18-hole golf course provides a view of nearby Ormoc bay.

Cebu Country Club
Now we’re talking premiere golfing. If you want to take your golfing experience to a new challenge – and appreciation – visit the Cebu Country Club. With lots of water hazards and the occasional wind burst – strong ones, at that – the golf course’s beautiful landscape and challenge makes it an occasional choice for international and local tournaments.

The Philippines is home to paradise golfing. From having golf courses right in the middle of a hustlin’ and bustlin’ city, to some hidden in the deep provinces, you’d be surprised at the places you can actually play in this country. Take note of these sites, so that you can enjoy golf at its best state.

As any golfer would notice, having the proper grip to your golf club can mean the difference between a successful or failed hit. Power, balance, even timing is all considered on having the proper grip. No matter how expensive or cutting-edge your iron or club is, without the proper or a comfortable grip, you’ll soon find your ball on a wayward trip somewhere down the course.

That is why you need to invest on your golf club grips. A quick search of “golf club grips” online will actually result to dozens of results, leading lots of suppliers claiming to have the best grips. But what exactly defines the “best” for these golf club grips? Here are a few factors that you may have to consider before purchasing your much-needed golfing investment:

Fitted just for you – just as your golf clubs are based on your preference or desire, so do golf clubs. A rule of thumb is to base your golf club grip by the size of your hand. You can base the grip’s size by your golf glove. However, nothing beats on comparing and trying multiple grips first. After all, being such a personalized piece of equipment, textbook analysis and statistics can’t beat your actual preference. Go with what you feel is comfortable!

Play as needed, Replace as needed – depending on the amount of time you use them, golf club grips tend to wear down quite easily. A good rule of thumb is to replace the grips every six months to optimize your playing experience. This however, can be extended if you only play golf every other month. Just remember to check your grip’s condition if it needs to be replaced immediately.

Heavier, Thicker Grips Equals Power – for added durability and to get more power and control on your swings, go for thicker and heavier golf club grips. Studies have shown that due to lowered swing weight caused by thicker golf club grips, the probability of hitting a golf ball to where you want to is increased. Also, with a thicker grip, one can still play through any weather condition, sans the handicap issues.

There is no exact science on getting the perfect gold club grip. It all boils down on the golfer’s hands, his preference and feel on taking the perfect swing. It’s more of a golfer’s sense – his sense on how his equipment can make or break his game. By taking note of this article’s tips, you can assure yourself of bringing your best game in the greens.

It is not just about your stance or your luck that determines whether you win in a golf game or not. Sometimes, your club shaft ‘flex’ can also greatly affect the outcome of your game because it more or less impacts the accuracy, trajectory and distance of your shot. And these three are really important factors to consider in playing golf, aren’t they? That’s why it is best for you to take a time out and know more about your shaft ‘flex’ to get better in the game.

Firstly, ‘flex’ refers to the ability of your golf shaft to bend as forces are applied to it during the golf swing. There are basically five ratings hat are used to determine shaft flex, namely: Extra Stiff, Stiff, Regular, Senior and Ladies. If your swing doesn’t match the shaft flex that you have, it will result to the clubface being distorted at impact, thus, making your shots go off-target. You must keep in mind that the moment your clubface hits impact, it must be perfectly straight for you to be able to get a good shot. Thus, if you have a wrong flex for your swing, chances are you won’t be able to hit the ball straight.

It is very important for you to be able to choose the proper degree of flex that your club shafts should have. One of the easiest ways to know is to assess the distance that you are able to hit your driver. If it’s about 250 yards or more, you can go with a Stiff Flex; 230-250 yards, Regular; 230-200, Senior Flex; and Ladies Flex if it’s less than 200 yards. Also, if you have a smooth swing, it would be best if you choose a softer flex while a swing that gets irregular when going into a downswing will perhaps be better with a stiffer shaft.

But the most recommended way to determine the right shaft flex for you is to go for a club fitting with a golf professional. This is available at many shops and in most golf schools. When you go for a clubfitting, a golf professional will take necessary measurements like your swing speed and will watch your swing and also your ball flight to be able to assess the shaft flex that is right for you. So go to a nearest shop near you, and get the perfect golf shaft that’s made just for you.

Golf is one of the few sports wherein families can bond and have quality time together because this can be enjoyed by both sexes and can be played by adults as well as young people. That is why even kids are being encouraged to play this sport. Aside from being an excellent exercise, playing golf also teaches basic development skills like hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness that young children need to aid them in their academic learning.

The first thing to consider in teaching kids to play golf is to give them golf clubs that are best appropriate for their age. There are a lot of sporting stores that offer affordable clubs to children. The golf clubs that you should give them are to be based from their age, height and skill level for them to be able to learn playing golf easier and more fun. You could also give them their own carry-bag to teach them independence, one of the essential values that playing golf promotes.

You could also let the kids watch golf tournaments on TV with you. They don’t have to watch them often, just a few minutes of exposure is usually enough. Through watching these tournaments, they can grasp some important information and techniques that they need to learn about the game. Most children would love to watch the action and follow golf players as they put a ball or two into a hole.

Once kids start showing a keen interest in playing golf, you could personally take them to a driving range. You can give them a bucket of balls that they can practice on while they learn how to swing their clubs. You could also suggest to them basic grips and show them how to put the ball on the tee. Never forget to remind them that it is not necessary for them to get it right the first time. Golf is about self improvement and they could always have another shot next time. Keep their experience short and memorable. Leave as soon as the kids start to lose interest in playing.

When they are more ready, you can now introduce them to a formal training. You can enroll them at your local junior golf clinics or have a golf teacher instruct them. Afterwards, you can finally take the kids to a golf course and have them experience playing the real thing. It is recommended that you begin with a cart-ride and when they are prepared, you can go for a hole or two. Eventually you’ll know when they are ready for a more challenging three or nine holes. This is also the best time to instill in them the values of the game such as honesty and integrity.

Start teaching your kids to play golf and have a good and memorable fun with your family. Always remember that even though life is getting busier and noisier, playing golf with your children even for only a few hours makes the time you spend with them worthwhile.

This involves different club types to hit balls to a series of holes using the fewest number of strokes. It’s one of the few games that won’t require standard playing arenas but instead uses the different courses which boast a unique design that changes the gaming experience.

Another school would be America’s Mind Power golf schools. They boast by teaching their student golfers to read the greens in a manner which would be described as peculiar or unique. Mastering the swing is not their core philosophy in playing the sport but rather than showing the players that the terrain also takes account in conquering the courses and winning the game. This is just one of their philosophies which gained high respect towards other academies.

However, if you are in for a 1-on-1 learning experience then VIP Golf academy would be on the list. This academy is considered as the largest among golfing academies. They provided 1-on-1 learning which gives 100% assurance on hands on training with the instructor. This personal level of service gives them a different offer amongst other schools. Another school that provides individual learning experience is the Bird GOld academy in which golfers receive a great deal of personal attention from the instructors which gives a very thorough learning experience. They provide video analysis and swing methods that gives remarkable ability to enhance the golfer’s skill.

You’re a recent convert to the surprisingly exciting and thrilling game of golf. You discovered just how fun this game is on a recent company weekend, where you and your work colleagues went for a round of golf at the local greens. Though you found it confusing at first, its appeal soon rubbed into you.

You’ve now decided to play this game regularly. The problem is, where and how do you start? Here a few beginner golfing options that you may want to consider:

Swing over to School
It’s never too late to learn something new, and in this case, that would be learning how to golf. Try enrolling at the different golf schools in the country. Most schools, such as those located in Orlando, Florida, feature modern and state-of-the-art facilities. Motion capture devices and video cameras are set up to capture the exact motion of your golf swing. Your motion is then carefully scrutinized by several golf instructors, most of them veterans and experts of the game.

Golf schools provide not only complete class courses for hardcore golf practitioners, but also 2 or 3 days of one-on-one sessions. Whatever the length of time you choose to learn and enhance your golf skills, you can be sure to observe a noticeable change in your game soon.

Check your golfing attire
If you do consider golf an activity that you’ll actually spend a lot of time in, you may also want to invest on golf clothing. Almost all golf ranges have a strict dress code, wherein players need to wear collared shirts. If you are fashionably conscious – don’t worry. There are major sports brands such as Nike, providing not only fashionable, but performance enhancing golf attires.

Golf Clubs
Obviously, you would need a set of golf clubs to play golf. Don’t just buy a set right away from any store. Golf clubs are your tools to play – and possibly win – the game. Some of these clubs are personalized to match the owner’s moves. If you aren’t sure on which clubs to get, do get some advice from the experts. These experts may be other golfers, teachers or golf store employees. Believe me, It won’t hurt to and it’ll be greatly beneficial to ask.

Online Tips
Aside from getting advice and help from golfing schools, experts and other golfers, check online for golf forums and such. There are even video tutorials on how to properly swing a club, on handling certain courses and even how to observe the proper golf etiquette when playing.

If you do want to play golf seriously, you would need to have the proper drive and determination to do so. Make sure to use all of your resources wisely, and most importantly – enjoy. Have fun shaping up your golf game!

Impact’s maiden issue is here.

Finally! Impact’s maiden issue is here. A bit late but I guess we can chalk that up to growing pains. I feel like a proud dad all over again. I’d like to share the editor’s note with you all; I think it speaks volumes of what we went through to bring this magazine to you.

This has been a long time coming.

It’s long been my vision to have a magazine that would adequately convey our collective passion for the game of golf. In the process of producing this magazine, we were often discouraged by those we approached for assistance because of the relatively small demographics of the game in the Philippines. It won’t work, they said. Filipino golfers won’t buy magazines, they said. You’ll have a hard time selling ads, they said. You don’t have enough content to fill a monthly magazine, they said. But we struggled and toiled; working on other related matters until the time was right. All in God’s time.

That time is now. Welcome to the maiden issue of Impact!

It is remarkable how quickly it all came together. Investors, writers, photographers, sales and marketing people expressed their availability and desire to participate in the creative process. The team is a publisher’s dream team. There is valuable experience and passion at every position. There is maturity, wisdom and there are no illusions about the task at hand. And there is the unflappable, undeniable passion of the game of golf.

Impact is our magnum opus; our masterpiece. It is the sum of our experience in the business and our desire to express our love for golf in print. It encompasses every aspect of the Filipino golfer’s lifestyle and I hope it will be your companion in the years to come.

Fuel your passion. Let’s tee it up!

With Typhoon Quiel bearing down on Luzon, the weather at the 2011 ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic took a sudden turn for the worse. The sunny, benign conditions were gone and the wind blew harder than it had all week. The scores went up, everyone struggled. Everyone except Elmer Salvador.

Salvador took hold of the ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic by the scruff of the neck under the most trying conditions of the week and lapped the field beating runners-up Mars Pucay and Artemio Murakami by a whopping 12-stokes. It was a massacre.

Salvador started like a house on fire with birdies on the first three holes, making a mockery of what is one of the hardest opening corners in local golf. He cooled off slightly with a bogey on the par 4 5th, his first in 41-holes. He offset that with a pair of closing birdies on 8 and the 1-handicap 9th and pretty much snuffed out any hopes his pursuers had of catching him. With such a huge lead, he played smart on the back nine, making sure the win was in the bag. He recorded his second bogey of the week on 13 but got it right back with a birdie on the very next hole.

Not that he needed to worry.

Cassius Casas hopes were dashed with a 9 on the par 5 4th. Artemio Murakami never got his round going and was lucky to wind up in a share for second when Mars Pucay bogeyed the finishing hole. Cookie La’O and Ferdie Aunzo recorded the only other sub-par rounds besides Salvador.

The back nine was basically a victory lap for the former lake boy from Apo Golf Club who found new life when he switched to a Bettinardi Signature 2 putter after the Aboitiz Invitational in Cebu City. Salvador’s confidence seemed to soar after his playoff loss in Singapore a month ago and he hasn’t come down since. He made golf look easy in tough conditions on a hard golf course.

When he plays like this, there’s no stopping him. It was a magnificent display.

Elmer Salvador took advantage of a difficult course setup to separate himself from the rest of the field with 5-under par 67 to push his two day total to 9-under par 135 at the ICTSI Sherwood Hills Classic. His 5 birdie, no bogey performance left him 4 strokes clear of Cassius Casas who valiantly tried to keep pace with the red-hot Salvador.

The wind shifted today and caught many unaware. Holes that previously played easy proved to be the downfall of many. Yesterday’s co-leaders Tony Lascuña, Gene Bondoc and Mars Pucay all struggled; Pucay was 2-over for today’s round, Lascuña 3-over and Bondoc 4-over to lose ground to the hard charging Salvador.

The round of the day went to the explosive Artemio Murakami who mixed 8 birdies and an eagle with 4 bogeys and 6 pars for a 6-under par 66. That left him in solo third 6 strokes behind Salvador but still in with a remote chance of catching the former lake boy from Apo. Pucay is a stroke behind Murakami and Lascuña a stroke further in arrears.

With just 5 players under par, the cut line moved up to 154 or 10-over par. The field is going to need a lot of help from Salvador to get back into the tournament, but stranger things have happened in the short life of the Philippine Golf Tour.
