Nike VR Pro Hybrid – Just what the doctor ordered
I jumped onto the hybrid bandwagon early on with the TaylorMade Rescue Mid; I had real issues with my fairway woods back then and the hybrid proved to be a real boon; the near iron-length of the club made it much easier to hit and it yielded close to my distance with a well struck fairway wood. Then later on, as my game progressed, I decided that I’d be better off with a pair of fairway woods. Additional length of any shot is like sugar to flies for any golfer and I was no exception.
I eventually realized the folly of this decision when I discovered that I was avoiding playing my 4-iron (even after going to a very forgiving set of irons) every chance I got. I chance upon a You Tube video that had a club level golfer hitting hybrids and long irons on a launch monitor and the data was so compelling I decided to shop around for a hybrid. Easier said than done for two simple reasons; most hybrids have a huge amount of offset and the shaft selection often favored high handicappers with slower swing speeds which mean that I would have to re-shaft, increasing the initial outlay.
Then I happened on the Nike VR Pro Hybrid. It was love at first sight!
Nike Golf designed the VR Pro Hybrid to cater to the needs of their tour staff and low handicap golfers. This club was so well received by Nike staff professionals that most put it into their bags straight away with outstanding results. At the Hyndai Tournament of Champions earlier this year, PGA Tour athletes Anthony Kim, Francesco Molinari and Carl Pettersson all put the VR Pro Hybrid into play.
Consistent with all products in the VR line, the VR Pro Hybrids convey beauty, refinement and sophistication. The engineers at the Nike Golf R&D facility, The Oven, have worked with Nike Golf Tour athletes to deliver more speed on the clubface for longer, penetrating shots. The full Compression Channel technology along with variable face thickness creates a face 21% hotter than Nike’s previous VR Hybrid which increases speed for greater distance and control.
The Compression Channel also facilitates the shots that a good golfer will often play in the course of a round. Everyone who’s followed the career of Tiger Woods knows that his go-to shot is a trap fade. This is a shot that Tiger plays back in his stance then hits the ball slightly off the heel of the clubface. The result is a ball flight that starts out slightly to the left then drifts back to the right. It’s Tiger’s shot of choice on a tight situation because it’s so predictable. The Compression Channel facilitates this by lessening the amount of ball speed lost by intentionally hitting the shot off center.
The VR Pro Hybrid is designed with a slightly smaller head and a sole that produces cleaner hits from any turf condition. The Sole Camber on the VR Pro Hybrid is flatter on lower lofts for tighter lies and deeper on higher lofts for more shot options. The flatter sole of the VR Pro Hybrid keeps more of the club on the ground, maintaining a seamless transition from hybrids to irons. The new VR Pro Hybrids closely match the profiles of the VR Pro Irons for a consistent look at address.
To meet the demands of Nike Golf Tour athletes (and most low handicap golfers), the VR Pro Hybrids were designed with less draw bias. The longer club head eliminates the hybrid’s tendency toward more draw by moving the center of gravity away from the hosel. Moving the CG slightly forward and lower optimizes ball flight to create a penetrating ball flight that can be used in all conditions.
The Nike VR Pro Hybrid comes shafted with True Temper’s Project X graphite shaft for hybrids. I play the same shaft in one of my drivers and knew instantly that it would work for me. So confident was I that I took my new toy straight out onto the fairway without any range time at all. I wasn’t wrong. This club is everything that Nike says it is and more. It’s money every time I pull it out of the bag. It allows me to play the shot I have in my head almost without regard for the way the ball lies and the neutral weighting encourages working the ball.
This is a club that should be in my bag for a very, very long time.
