Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs 1 Wide

27 July 2011 No Comment

Odyssey Golf is the number one putter manufacturer in the world. They put more putters into the hands of more golfers than any other putter manufacturer in the world for one simple reason; their putters work and work well.

Skeptical?

The next time you watch a professional golf tournament on TV, sit up and take note of how many of the pros on the telecast are gaming an Odyssey putter. A lot right?
Right.

The Black Series Tour Design putters are Odyssey’s top of the line; precision crafted and milled from soft 1025 soft carbon steel with direct feedback from some of the best golfers on the planet. The #1 Wide Model features a compact heel-toe weighted blade in the Anser/Newport style with a wider flange than the original design. A pleasant departure in my book. The TD Milled Face increases interaction between the face and the ball for better feel, distance control and smooth roll. The Deep Black PVD finish offers a rich look with reduced glare that many Tour players prefer.

A.R.T. (Advanced Roll Technology) is achieved through multi-material construction. A urethane dampening layer is subtly placed between the 1025 carbon steel head and the independently milled tungsten flange. This results in a lower, deeper center of gravity for better, quicker and truer roll. The TD Milled Face has a precise, deep pattern that generates consistent impact performance for better feel, distance control and smooth roll. The putter also features the new high-tech Deep Black PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Finish that produces a durable, glare-free look added specifically based on feedback from Tour pros.

I’ve been a fan of the Black Series putters since Odyssey announced them a few years ago. I was surprised that a company like Odyssey would stray from their core products (insert putters) but the Black Series putters were a chance worth taking. Sure they have some cheap touches like the sticker in the cavity behind the face, but the mill work on the face and shoulders are as good as any I’ve seen and I do increased moment of inertia that the tungsten weight on the flange contributes to the putter’s performance. It’s not a wall-hanger and it wasn’t meant to be.

In the hand, the Odyssey Black Series Tour Designs #1 Wide is beautiful; the milling marks on the shoulders and on the face would not be out of place on a thousand Dollar custom. It’s well balanced and rolls the ball beautifully. The tungsten back weight keeps the putter’s moment of inertia high and the ball rolling smoothly. The double bend shaft on the 1 Wide has less of a bend than others I’ve perused and is optically less obtrusive. This is as good a putter as there is on the market today and I’m proud to call it mine.
