TaylorMade Burner Superfast 2.0 – Long, light, fast and white
When I got a Burner Superfast 2.0 driver as a long term test unit from Tour Master Golf (TaylorMade’s local distributor) I must admit that I felt a bit of a let down. At the launch of the R11 and Burner Superfast drivers at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club, I spent most of my range time trying to figure out which configuration of the R11 would work best for me. After all, I was very, very happy with my R9 and having had a lot of success with it, I naturally looked forward to spending quality time with its successor.
There was no way I should like the Burner Superfast 2.0. If just flies in the face of everything I prefer in a driver. My drivers have faces that sit open at least a degree and weigh in the region of 330 grams overall. They have stiff shafts that range from 65-70 grams and measure no more than 45” in length since I value feel, control and precision over absolute distance. The BSF 2.0 has a face that sits 1* closed, has a shaft that weighs a scant 44 grams with an overall weight some 40 grams lighter than most of my other drivers and at 46.5”, it’s an inch and a half longer than anything else in my arsenal. So I approached it with a great deal of trepidation and more than a hint of disappointment.
I could not have been more wrong.
The very next day after I got it, I put it in play on Villamor Golf Club’s tight, tree-lined fairways; not the ideal place for a driver of this sort. No range time, nothing; just straight out onto the fairway. What a revelation it was! I hit the ball far longer than any of my other drivers. I found myself in parts of the course I hadn’t seen in years! The ultra-light shaft was surprisingly controllable; no up-shoots or wild left or right side swings regardless of the swing I produced. Most uncharacteristic! I found the Burner Superfast 2.0 to be very workable too; I had no problem hitting draws or fades to suit the shape of Villamor’s fairway. It did show a preference for a draw (understandable with the face closed as it was), but playing the ball the other way was not a problem at all. Once the ball finally returned to earth, it responded with quite a bit of roll, a good indication of the BSF 2.0’s high launch, low spin character.
If you’re wondering what it’s like to play a white driver, after the results I got, I quickly forgot about the color. The matte finish is totally glare free. In fact I got more glare from my glossy black drivers under the right conditions. The contrasting black face makes it extremely easy to set up and inspires confidence at address. It is everything TaylorMade said it would be.
From a technical standpoint the Burner Superfast 2.0 shares little with its predecessor besides the original concept of being a driver that’s light and easy to swing fast. The clubhead is a completely new design; gone is the double crown of the previous iteration. Instead the large 460cc clubhead has a very low skirt which places the center of gravity low and to the rear helping the ball get up in the air. Refinements have been made around the clubface area making this the most aerodynamically efficient of the Burner line. The clubface of the Burner Superfast 2.0 is the largest that TaylorMade has ever put on one of their drivers and the proprietary Inverted Cone Face is perhaps the best of TM’s current technologies. It adds considerably to the forgiveness and ease of use of the BSF 2.0 with the largest sweet spot of any TaylorMade driver.
The Martix Ozik Xcon 4.8 is lighter and longer that previous offerings, which contributes to added clubhead speed and encourages hitting a draw; something that should benefit most golfers. The ultra-light Winn grip is the best of this type that I’ve experienced and has proven surprisingly durable. All this goodness adds up to a total weight of just 279-grams making this the lightest driver TaylorMade has ever produced and certainly one of the lightest on today’s market.
Though it was not hyped as heavily as stablemate the R11, the Burner Superfast 2.0 is not a driver to be overlooked. It is the sleeper in TaylorMade’s new line and a club that should make most golfers perfectly happy with it right out of the box. I am completely satisfied; I’m ten rounds into my long term test and the honeymoon isn’t over yet.
All drivers should be so good.
