Tour Notebook – ICTSI Canlubang Invitational, Day 2
If there was a theme for today’s round at the ICTSI Canlubang Invitational, it was that youth will be served. Neo-pro Antonio “Tonton” Asistio fired a 4-under par 68 to backup his 2-under par 70 yesterday to hold sway at the top of the leaderboard at 6-under par. He leads by one over Jay Bayron and by two over Marvin Dumandan. 11 amateurs made the cut and three made the top 10; unheralded Miguel Ochoa was the best of the lot. He sits alone in fourth at 2-under par with reigning Philippine amateur champ Clyde Modilla and Carl Santos Ocampo tied for 10th with Richard Sinfuego and Benjie Magada at 1-over par.
Juvic Pagunsan was expected to make a big run today, but his round fizzled out when he bogeyed the two closing holes. Marvin Dumandan struggled with his driver but still managed to get to 4-under until he doubled the closing hole to drop into third. Jay Bayron had an up and down day, but managed to finish his round at even par. Even so he lost ground to the charging Asistio who sizzled with four birdies on his outward nine. He would have led by three if he hadn’t bogeyed the closing hole, but it mattered little at that point.
Miguel Ochoa played steady golf in spite of giving a stroke back to the course on the tough par 5 ninth. Clyde Mondilla bucked a rough first day with a four birdies and two bogeys to charge back up the leaderboard. Carl Santos Ocampo continued his steady play to stay in contention for his second straight low amateur crown.
Don’t think that the veterans are going to sit back and let the youngsters have it all their own way. Pagunsan, Bayron and Dumandan are all capable of going low enough to overhaul Asistio. Tonton will have to hold his nerve in the last flight tomorrow; that’s easier said than done. But if anyone can do it, it’s Asistio. He’s always shown tremendous potential as an amateur. Now that he’s matured as a golfer and a person, it looks like he’s ready to break through. Tomorrow’s round is going to be exciting, befitting the final round of the season.
